Professor and economist Paul Krugman is part of the team of international speakers who will participate in Latin America’s largest insurance event

Nobel Prize-winning economist and professor Paul Krugman has joined the team of internationally renowned speakers confirmed for the 38th Western Hemisphere Insurance Conference. From September 24 to 26, 2023, in Rio de Janeiro, this event will bring together representatives of private insurance sector organizations from 20 Latin American countries, plus the United States and Spain. 

Krugman won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2008 for his groundbreaking work on international trade and economic geography. He is one of the founders of “New Trade Theory,” a major reformulation of international trade theory, for which he also received the 1991 John Bates Clark Medal from the American Economic Association. 

Rated one of the 50 most influential people in global finance by Bloomberg in 2011, the professor is among the world’s best known and most acclaimed economists. A columnist with clear and frank opinions, Krugman discusses key issues affecting the global economy in his articles published twice a week in the New York Times. 

Recently, his comments on the Brazilian and Argentine governments’ proposals to create a common currency were reported on by media outlets such as Bloomberg Línea. 

He is the author or editor of 20 books and more than 200 articles in journals and books. His most recent book is “Arguing with Zombies: Economics, Politics and the Fight for a Better Future,” mainly based on his New York Times column. In this book, Krugman explores the complexities of a variety of political issues.  

He is recognized worldwide as a leader in the fields of economic geography and the role of increasing returns in shaping international trade. He is Distinguished Professor of Economics at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center, a core faculty member at the Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality, and Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) Senior Scholar. His academic research is currently focused on economic and monetary crises.
